Friday Funnies: Writing Music

Thank you Debbie Ohi!

I don't generally listen to music while I'm writing because I'm afraid it would distract me. But I did create a playlist for some of the scenes I wrote in Givin' Up The Ghost after the fact. Leave it to me to do it backwards!

But when I came across this very same scenario today at Millie Holmes' blog - thanks for the laugh, Millie - I had to post about it.

I think it's hilarious.

And I think I might try it.

Do you listen to music while writing?
How about listening to some music in particular to inspire a scene?

I also posted over at Run Gwen, Run! today. Ever heard of the Love Doctor? Not what you think, I'm sure ;)

  1. I will listen to music that inspires before I write, but not during. I like my house quiet. Makes it easier to hear the voices in my head. :)

    1. Maria, now that's an idea. I may try that - I am easily distracted so that might work for me. "voices in my head" *snort*

  2. I love your Friday Funnies! I must have silence when I write. Now when I workout that's another story.

    1. Thanks Julie - but really, they're Debbie Ohi's funnies. They're just so spot on for all of us writers that they're funny, lol! Yeah, when I work out I have to have music, too.

  3. I love listening to music before I write, it puts me in the mood, but when I am actually writing - I like quiet.

    1. Caroline, I'm definitely going to try it before and see what I can come up with :)

  4. I always listen to music when I write. If Nickleback kills a character, I'd recommend staying away from Pantera. Your whole story world might explode.

    1. LOL, Alex. So you have to put on the proper music, just like in the funny:)

  5. I listen to music. I even listen to the news when I write. Sometimes I'll half watch a movie.

    1. Diane, then it really works for you! I'm just going to have to start planning music and certain scenes together and see what happens.

  8. Wasn't I following you before? Gah. Problem fixed! Gwen, great post. I totally can't listen to music when I write... but... it is my main source of inspiration so... it's complicated. ;-)

  9. LOL!! I can listen to very few things when writing, mostly need quiet. Otherwise, I could have a Cleanser trying to do a roundhouse kick during a confession when I she was doing was thinking about a roundhouse kick lol!

  10. Sometimes I listen to music, but mostly I prefer quiet. I have eclectic tastes in everything, including music, so I think a set playlist might make me crazy.

    Happy Weekend!

  12. I love listening to music while writing, although I'm not one to make a particular playlist for my books. Weirdly enough, I don't like music for when I'm editing.

    1. Jeff, I'm kind of surprised that so many people don't/can't write to music. Makes sense, though:)

  14. Oh I love the toon, very funny! I do listen to music when I write but it has to be something with limited vocals in it or else I start singing along and NO ONE wants that! LOL!

  15. That comic is awesome! I love listening to music while I write, but have to have a pretty specific mix. It really does help to get me in the right frame of mind. During revisions though, well, anything goes!
