IWSG: Maturity in Writing

It's the first Wednesday of the month, AKA Insecure Writer's Support Group day! The title of the group is self explanatory. If you want to sign up, go HERE. Thanks so much to Alex Cavanaugh and his minions who put this on every month.

My current insecurity:

I'm writing a new series. Or rather, I've written a synopsis and a first chapter to a new series. My insecurity is that this is for adults, rather than MG/YA like my other series.
  1. It can't sound immature. (Yikes!)
  2. I can't be nice. I'm working on the outline and whenever I write notes I'm constantly reminding myself to "don't be nice, don't be nice, don't be nice." In truth, I had to do the same thing in my teen/pre-teen series. But now, I really can't be nice. Bad stuff has to happen. And they might even have sex. Or die. LOL. *nervous laughter, not real laughter*
Those are my insecurities. I have to write like an adult and have adult situations. It's still fantasy, though ;)

AND.....I'M GOING ON VACATION.

My next post will be 11/24 (unless I've had too much fun, then my next post will be 12/1.)

****************

Thanks for listening.

What are your insecurities?

  3. I have never heard of a mantra of not to be nice:) I find adults often are not mature and sometimes they also need to find their inner kid. To be frank, there have been times I wanted sex or i would die so I understand that feeling:) Wishing you a great vacation and you will get this book the way you want it-have faith in you!

  4. Have a great vacation!
At the beginning, I have a hard time being hard on my characters. But after the first few scenes, I love piling it on!

  5. Who says it can't have nice elements? Hey, I tried for darker with my latest and missed that as well.
    Enjoy your vacation!

  6. Have fun on your vacation! And good luck with your new series! Your *nervous laughter, not real laughter* had me laughing with sympathy. I think I might be able to write about dying easier than sex. LOL

  7. Oh boy vacation! Have a great time! Yes, I'm with Fundy Blue. Writing dark and sex and all that is hard for me, but you'll work it out. And, as Alex says, who says you can't have nice elements? Depends on what your story is...

  8. Yeah, the idea of writing for adults makes me feel insecure too. Even though a lot of YA is read by adults anyway. :P

  9. You're absolutely right that bad things have to happen. I believe that. Life is never always good or happy, so our books need to reflect that. Good like with your new series! And enjoy your vacation! :D

  12. This month I have put my insecurities in a corner. I'm writing a YA Fantasy and NA horror for my Nano this year, All you need to remember is to be true to your characters and story first. Your feelings come second to what's right for the novel. Enjoy your trip.

  13. Have fun on vacation! I'm sure you can figure out a way to be mean. And do some sex research while on vacation, you know read some saucy books. Geesh, what were you thinking?
