IWSG: Pet Peeves and Procrastination

It's hard to believe we're more than halfway through this year's Insecure Writer's Support Group posts. If you want to join, go HERE. Thank you to Alex Cavanaugh, and this month's co-hosts, Christine Rains, Dolarah @ Book Lover, Ellen @ The Cynical Sailor, Yvonne Ventresca, and LG Keltner!

This month's optional question is: What are your pet peeves when reading/writing/editing?

I really don't have writing/editing pet peeves--unless it's frustration with the stupid mistakes I make. I guess that's to be expected though. It comes with the territory and is part of the process and I'm still figuring it all out. Because apparently just because I've written a few books doesn't mean I'm past all that.

But when I'm reading a book for pleasure (i.e., not editing or proofreading for someone else), I do get irritated with typos and misspellings. In fact, I will stop reading a book if I come across more than one or two in the first couple of chapters. To me, it means the book isn't ready to be read yet.

This month's insecurity is:

I'm nearly done (only about 4 chapters to go!) with the first draft of my current WiP and I've sort of lost my way. After letting it sit for three months (or should I call it procrastinating?), I'm having difficulty finding my way back. I do enjoy looking at the word meter up in the right hand corner of the blog to see how far I've come with it, though.

I know it needs some major editing and rewriting, and I guess right now the task seems daunting. Could that be what's holding me back from finishing the last few chapters?

What is your reading/writing/editing pet peeve?

Any other insecurities this month?

  1. Maybe just pick up your manuscript for 15 minutes a day for a bit till you get more motivated. You're just taking a break, not losing your way. You've already done so much work.

    1. I know I should do it. It's always on my mind. But when I finally open the document...sigh.

  2. Just take it with little chunks. Don't think of the whole. You can do it!

  3. Here's the thing: you're going to catch on fire again and find your pace, and then it will speed by. In the meantime, you're like a pump that just needs to be primed. The more you're pumped, the easier the flow, until it takes almost no effort at all. You've got this!

  4. When time has gone by for me, re-reading the entire story or the last 3-5 chapters helps me to get back into the world and start writing again.

    1. I've done that several times, Chrys, and I know I need to do it again. But when I do that, I notice all the things that need fixing, but I'm not ready to fix yet. Maybe that's the problem?

  5. I would probably stop reading a book with a lot of typos also. Haven't come across one lately.

  6. Kudos to you. I get it. I hit midway and start struggling. Wishing you much motivation and success.

  8. I can understand what you're going through - I was super excited about my WIP and now the revision process is kind of taking its toll on me. I've become the world's worst procrastinator. I hope we can both get excited again!
Love your new header, Gwen!! The blog looks fantastic.

  9. The rewriting part is daunting for me, but you're so close to the end. Push onward. You can do it!

  10. I love revision, it's the pace at which I write that annoys me. I am still a slow writer.

  11. I also slow down to a crawl when I'm wrapping up a draft. Oh, I can give many reasons for this, but mostly I just suffer from separation anxiety. :-D

  13. My pet peeve in all areas is the complete and total lack of time to get it all done. Good luck getting your stuff done!
