Thank you Debbie Ohi |
I'm done.
With edits, I mean.
For real, this time.
Final, Final, Final edits are completed.
But are they?
My CP, Angela Brown, and I decided to have one more read-through of each others work before publishing.
And we had to laugh because it was amazing the stuff we were still finding! Stupid stuff. Slap your forehead because "how could I miss that?" kind of stuff.

I think I'll have one more read-through. What do you think?
I don't think we ever not find things to tweak--even after the book is published. But the worst is the 'how could I have missed that?' stuff, especially the typos.
ReplyDeleteStina, it's absolutely amazing the things I missed after about 15 edits! Missed words because my brain goes faster than my fingers, lol!
DeleteGo ahead! Just remember if you read it after publication you'll find even more...
ReplyDeleteAlex, nooooo. It needs to be perfect after publication!
DeleteOh dear God...I'm never going to publish, LOL!
ReplyDeleteElise, LOL! Yeah, it's like that. I'm so afraid my book will go to print with stupid mistakes!
DeleteIt's a vicious cycle! I couldn't believe the silly mistakes I've found after CP, beta readers, and multiple revisions and edits are done with it. Eventually you have to let it go. I've officially stopped rereading the novel I'm querying right now, or I'd never write anything new again.
ReplyDeleteLaura, my MS has been through numerous cycles and I think it needs at least one more! And I really haven't written anything new because of the editing cycle.
DeleteLike Laura said it's a vicious cycle! But a necessary vicious cycle. ;)
ReplyDeleteCaitlin, I have to get off this vicious cycle, lol!
Deletealways improvements...thats why eiting stinks, you never know when you're done!
ReplyDeleteyou're done when they've printed it!
have a wonderful weekend!
Tara, I had one friend of a friend who made corrections to the printed book, right on the page, lol!
Deletei can totally relate! the temptation to go through it one more time is too great to resist.
ReplyDeletePrerna, just one more read-through. Just one more, lol!
DeleteHahaha! Love the cartoon! Yeah, maybe just one more read-through ;-)
ReplyDeleteRAchel, one more - just one more!
DeleteIsn't it funny how many writers can relate to that cartoon...basically ALL of us :)
ReplyDeleteJohanna, Debbie Ohi (the illustrator of the cartoon) hits the nail on the head all the time! It provides stuff for me to talk about every Friday, lol!
DeleteSorry. Alex is right. After publication, you will see changes you want to make ... and can't. It made me feel sick to the stomach. I never finished reading the published version of my book, and I've heard other authors say the same thing. Once it's officially published: Just. Don't. Look.
ReplyDeleteThe cover will be pretty. Look at the cover.
Dianne, noooooo! I am just not going to read my ms once it's printed, lol!
DeleteIt's funny, Gwen. After I made arrangements to turn mine in after finishing the final, final edits, I got the nervous-nellies again and started on another pass. I've finally convinced myself this is the last one before I go INSANE-ER lol!!!
ReplyDeleteAngela, I'm going to do one more pass of mine, too. Just gotta do it - I can't help myself:)
DeleteDon't get stuck constantly going over it! I'm sure it's fab. You'll know you're finished when you're able to quash that tiny voice of OCD.
ReplyDeleteJeanne, my biggest fear is typos! I will be mortified if I publish with them:(
DeleteI am constantly tweaking my MS, changing a word here a sentence there. I am sure I have OCD where my books are concerned.
ReplyDeleteRachna, I'd rather have OCD than find a mistake, lol!
DeleteI edited my first novel for a year before I got up the nerve to send it in. I definitely have OCD when it comes to editing...I lose sleep over it. :)
ReplyDeleteMichelle
Michelle, wow, that's perseverance!
DeleteJust make sure there's no chopped off sentences is all I'd do at this time. Copy/cut/paste can do that.
ReplyDeleteI've read a book that had a whole scene cut and it caused a bit of confusion for me and my mom. Hard to get back into the story after that.
Millie, you are so right - I'm always cutting and pasting. I get in more trouble that way. I know what you mean about it getting hard to get back into the story. Once I find a typo in a book, I get distracted looking for more:)
