IWSG: No Poop Talk Here

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group post.

About our group: We are writers of all levels of experience and genres, published and unpublished, who support and encourage each other on our writing journeys. If you'd like to join, go HERE

Thanks so much to our host Alex Cavanaugh and our awesome co-hosts this month:  Jacqui Murray, Lisa Buie-Collard, Sarah Foster, Natalie Aguirre, and Shannon Lawrence!

Here is the optional question for March: Other than the obvious holiday traditions, have you ever included any personal or family traditions/customs in your stories?

My short answer is no. My family is scattered to the far corners of the earth and other than immediate family, we don't see each other much. So no real traditions exist--except poop talk at the table. But let's not go into that. It certainly never made it into any of my books. LoL.

What I have included in my Indigo Eady Cozy Mystery series is that I've given my main character my grandmother's maiden name (Eady), along with her looks--black hair and blue eyes. A combination that I've always loved and wish I possessed. You can check out my further train of thought on the spooky/funny aspect over at the Untethered Realms Blog

Do your stories ever include real life
traditions or customs from your own family?

Or have you included family names
or characteristics in your writing?

  1. Yeah, maybe it's better to leave the poop talk out of your books, lol.

  2. Poop talk never goes over well in a story.

  3. I've always wondered why poop is such an interesting topic for some...? LOL. Especially kids!

  4. Yes, it's best to leave out the poop talk. I don't have any family traditions in my stories either.

    1. Big families and traditions would be nice. But as I said, we're scattered to the four corners. What we need is a family reunion.

  5. Odd dinner conversation! Maybe you should include it.

    1. It does seem a strange tradition, but based on the comments here, not so unusual. HaHa!

  6. What an awesome tribute to your grandmother! I love that. This is twice I've run across someone talking about their grandma today. Grandmas live in our hearts forever that's for sure. Being a military family, our immediate families were scattered, as well, so we figured out early on it was okay to create our own new traditions. One of those included inviting any of my husband's troops to our table who couldn't go home for a holiday. Sometimes I'd feed upwards of fifty on any given holiday. My table and heart were always full.

    1. That's an awesome tradition! We've had soldiers away from home to our house for holiday meals as well.

  7. Poop talk as dinner conversation is a bit odd. Good it didn't find a place in your book.

    1. It was Indigo's last name, and fits so well with her first name. I'm not that good with making up character names, but I love hers.

  10. Love the headline, made me snicker.

  11. No traditions in my universe, either. Family also scattered to the four winds. I have too many health care/first responder professionals in the family - no one would be polite enough to call it poop.

  12. I remember the family get-togethers when I was a youngster. Fun, loud, get-togethers. I think one day I'd like to write about them. I love, love, LOVE your cover design. It's adorable!!!

  13. Aw, what a sweet way to honor your grandmother! And LOL, poop talk at the table would certainly be...interesting to include in a book. Can see why you haven't, though! XD

  14. My grandmother passed away while I was in the middle of writing Bella's Point, so I named the baby in the story after her. It's a nice way to honor the people we love.
