#IWSG: Devil On My Shoulder

It's hard to believe that it's already October and we're posting the 10th Insecure Writer's Support Group blog hop event of the year! Still, it's an ongoing event and you can join any time by going HERE to sign up.

Thanks to our host Alex Cavanaugh and his co-hosts this month:  Jemima Pett, J Lenni Dorner, Cathrina Constantine, Ronel Janse van Vuuren, and Mary Aalgaard!  Please stop by and say hey!

You can post what you like about your writing fears and concerns, and/or answer this month's optional question:

In your writing, where do you draw the line, with either topics or language?

I'm known for writing cozies, which by definition are lighthearted, so there's not much room for controversy. No overt violence, sex or foul language allowed. But I will throw in a "bloody hell" and "blimey" here and there just to spice things up a bit 😉

But, ahem,  in real life, needs must and
sometimes the devil sits on my shoulder 😈

How about you?
How far do you go in your writing?

  1. I like light-hearted too. It seems there is so much hurt already around us, I don’t want to read about it too. Happy IWSG Day.

  2. I'm ok with rough language and situations as long as it's in context and moves along the plot. While I grew up on old school noir mysteries I love my cozies, too. Rita Mae Brown fan here. Happy IWSG day!

    1. I agree--if the situation calls for it then go ahead. It doesn't work if it's solely for shock factor.

  3. I like that cozies are not really into being graphic. It's important to follow the boundaries of the genres we write in.

    1. It wouldn't be a cozy if it was graphic, right?

  4. I prefer the language and sex be toned down. The way you write for your stories is perfect.

  5. Hi Gwen, even I don't like overt violence, sex or foul language in my books, either while reading or writing.

    1. Right, and if it doesn't add anything to the story, then don't use it.

  6. Sounds like a good way to stay sane :-)

  7. Hah! I've got a Scottish guy and he does bloody hell all the time. I've got a few more slang/swear words from the Victorian era that aren't as obvious as the current F-bomb.

  8. Cozies definitely can’t have too many cuss words. I write straight up thrillery, gory crime, so my characters swear when they have to.

    1. I totally get that and in that context it works.

  9. I like light hearted, fun, adventure and stuff that makes me think not want to debate lol or run. Also like sexy Scottish hero's.

  10. About like me :) And I, too, have been known to use more… colorful… language in real life. Especially when I spend too much time with my sons. :D

    1. Haha! As a woman in construction I've heard it all and some of it rubs off ;) LOL.

  11. That devil on my shoulder needs to take a hike. I’ve been way too negative lately!
    Hope you are well =)

  12. I love your bloody hells and blimeys! :) I do have a moral line, but I also let my stories take me where they go.

  13. I think I'm adding blimey to my stock pile of swears. I like it.
