Thanks to our host, Alex Cavanaugh, and the many co-hosts who donate their time to put this event on every month. This month's co-hosts are Natalie Aguirre, Kim Lajevardi, Debs Carey, Gwen Gardner (Me!), Patricia Josephine, and Rebecca Douglass! Please stop by and say hello!
This month's optional question is: The topic of AI writing has been heavily debated across the world. According to various sources, generative AI will assist writers, not replace them. What are your thoughts?
For me, the AI Debate is another of the many divisions the world is facing. So many different viewpoints and nobody is completely right or completely wrong. The only thing I will say is that I am in favor of regulation. Other than that, I keep my thoughts on the subject to myself, and don't debate the pros and cons.
And since I'm co-hosting this month, I'm off to visit my fellow insecure writers to see if I can impart some words of wisdom and support.
Hello! Thank you for co-hosting today. Yes, regulations may help with damage control. But for now, I feel we needn't worry too much. AI needs us to thrive; we, on the other hand, don't really need it.
ReplyDeleteAI regulation will work it out with the help of humans ;)
DeleteRegulations are definitely needed. Thanks for co-hosting today!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. And we have a long way to go on that. (I'm always happy to co-host!)
DeleteThanks for co-hosting, Gwen, and I totally agree with your stand on AI.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nancy. I try not to get into the debate.
DeleteHi, here's Pat Garcia. Yes, I agree. I have my own thoughts but I mostly keep them to myself. Thank you so much for co-hosting and have a lovely month of October. Shalom shalom
ReplyDeleteHi Pat! I couldn't find your blog post, but thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great month!
DeleteThere are going to be a lot of interesting answers to this one, Gwen. C. Lee McKenzie
ReplyDeleteHa! You're so right. Though most people are being nice :)
DeleteSo much right and wrong because we don't fully understand it yet.
ReplyDeleteExactly.
DeleteSuch a tough question to answer. Me, I punted--gave a very vanilla response that I will amend when there are more facts out there.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I "punted" as well. LOL.
DeleteI hope there is regulation. I hope the regulators are smarter than the AI and that is where I have some doubts.
ReplyDeleteWith all the law suits flying around, I think there will be regulation.

ReplyDeleteAs much as I agree with you, I believe regulation is nearly impossible. I say that because AI is across the world. Other countries will probably ignore our laws and maybe develop applications the US couldn't even consider.
ReplyDeleteThank you for co-hosting and offering this option for consideration. It certainly appears there is a log of support for this idea.
Cheers @ Lynn La Vita
Agreed. Regulation will be tough.
DeleteYes. To protect copyrighted materials and creative endeavors that belong to those who created it.

ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting. Looks like people are holding their thoughts close . . . I'm hoping sharing ideas with other writers will help us understand the complexity and scope of the issues involved -- personally, in our field, and beyond.
We'll get to that point, Beth. I think it's too new yet to understanding the ramifications.
DeleteGwen, I'll share my thoughts here while maintaining a level of decorum. I do not like the idea of AI but I don't know much about how it is used in the arts either. I guess I'll need to research more and then share a more informed decision. My initial feeling now has me a bit pessimistic. Thanks for stopping by earlier. I enjoy meeting fellow IWSGers.
ReplyDeleteI'm on the fence. I don't know much about it, except that how it gathers and uses information should be regulated to protect copyright.
DeleteThanks for co-hosting - and for being an open-minded observer, willing to support other writers as needed.
ReplyDeleteOf course, and it's my pleasure.
DeleteI was sure I left a comment earlier, but I guess not. I’ve had nothing but problems commenting today. AI at large! Anyway, I agree that we need regulation and now! We’re already way behind in that area. C. Lee McKenzie
ReplyDeleteYou did, LOL. It's up above. But thanks for stopping by again :)
DeleteYes, regulations might be helpful on this explosive issue.
ReplyDeleteIt's already in court so it should be interesting.
DeleteDid someone say 'regulations'? By all means! Thanks for co-hosting, Gwen!
ReplyDeleteYep, we need rules so people aren't stealing intellectual property and using it as their own.
DeleteAI has an appropriate place I'm sure, but not in keeping writing fresh and creative. If it can do that then maybe it will work in the marketplace. However, losing a sense of any identifiable creator leaves me cold. The author is a personality and often is bigger or more interesting than their work. I don't think many people are going to become part of a fanbase following a machine.
ReplyDeleteLee
Can you imagine AI as a social media influencer? Nope. LOL.
DeleteThanks for cohosting! I agree about it being a debate. It certainly is a hot topic.
ReplyDeleteHot topic is an understatement. LOL.
DeleteI love the picture on your page heading. I'm in Phoenix, and we are just coming out of a record number of days above 110. And I just want to crawl into that cozy mystery snowy scene.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Miffie. I love it too :)
DeleteLike lots of new technologies, it'll take time to settle the ethics and legalities, and then we'll panic over something else. LOL. @samanthabwriter from
ReplyDeleteBalancing Act
Like if Google is really listening to us? LOL.
DeleteThanks for co-hosting!
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure :)
DeleteWouldn't it be nice if we could get the rules in place BEFORE technology with such impact is released? Thank you for co-hosting IWSG this month.
ReplyDeleteIt would have been nice, but I think "they" knew what they were doing when they developed and released it first.
DeleteYou have less angst when you stay out of arguments. I hope it doesn't replace creativity. Thanks for co-hosting this month!
ReplyDeleteI agree. Life is easier when you don't participate in an argument that nobody will win.
DeleteMary's right, Gwen. Less angst is good. Thanks for cohosting this month's IWSG question. All best to you.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Life is happier without angst.
DeleteRegulation is certainly important. The Five Laws of Robotics needs a bit of expansion.
