IWSG: The AI Debate

It's Insecure Writer's Support Group Day! If you'd like to join us on the first Wednesday of every month, Go Here to sign up.

Thanks to our host, Alex Cavanaugh, and the many co-hosts who donate their time to put this event on every month. This month's co-hosts are  Natalie Aguirre, Kim Lajevardi, Debs Carey, Gwen Gardner (Me!), Patricia Josephine, and Rebecca Douglass! Please stop by and say hello!

This month's optional question is: The topic of AI writing has been heavily debated across the world. According to various sources, generative AI will assist writers, not replace them. What are your thoughts?

For me, the AI Debate is another of the many divisions the world is facing. So many different viewpoints and nobody is completely right or completely wrong. The only thing I will say is that I am in favor of regulation. Other than that, I keep my thoughts on the subject to myself, and don't debate the pros and cons.

And since I'm co-hosting this month, I'm off to visit my fellow insecure writers to see if I can impart some words of wisdom and support.

  1. Hello! Thank you for co-hosting today. Yes, regulations may help with damage control. But for now, I feel we needn't worry too much. AI needs us to thrive; we, on the other hand, don't really need it.

    1. AI regulation will work it out with the help of humans ;)

    1. Agreed. And we have a long way to go on that. (I'm always happy to co-host!)

  4. Hi, here's Pat Garcia. Yes, I agree. I have my own thoughts but I mostly keep them to myself. Thank you so much for co-hosting and have a lovely month of October. Shalom shalom

  6. So much right and wrong because we don't fully understand it yet.

  7. Such a tough question to answer. Me, I punted--gave a very vanilla response that I will amend when there are more facts out there.

  8. I hope there is regulation. I hope the regulators are smarter than the AI and that is where I have some doubts.

    1. With all the law suits flying around, I think there will be regulation.

  10. As much as I agree with you, I believe regulation is nearly impossible. I say that because AI is across the world. Other countries will probably ignore our laws and maybe develop applications the US couldn't even consider.
Thank you for co-hosting and offering this option for consideration. It certainly appears there is a log of support for this idea.

  11. Yes. To protect copyrighted materials and creative endeavors that belong to those who created it.

  12. Thank you for hosting. Looks like people are holding their thoughts close . . . I'm hoping sharing ideas with other writers will help us understand the complexity and scope of the issues involved -- personally, in our field, and beyond.

    1. We'll get to that point, Beth. I think it's too new yet to understanding the ramifications.

  13. Gwen, I'll share my thoughts here while maintaining a level of decorum. I do not like the idea of AI but I don't know much about how it is used in the arts either. I guess I'll need to research more and then share a more informed decision. My initial feeling now has me a bit pessimistic. Thanks for stopping by earlier. I enjoy meeting fellow IWSGers.

    1. I'm on the fence. I don't know much about it, except that how it gathers and uses information should be regulated to protect copyright.

  14. Thanks for co-hosting - and for being an open-minded observer, willing to support other writers as needed.

  15. I was sure I left a comment earlier, but I guess not. I’ve had nothing but problems commenting today. AI at large! Anyway, I agree that we need regulation and now! We’re already way behind in that area. C. Lee McKenzie

    1. Yep, we need rules so people aren't stealing intellectual property and using it as their own.

  18. AI has an appropriate place I'm sure, but not in keeping writing fresh and creative. If it can do that then maybe it will work in the marketplace. However, losing a sense of any identifiable creator leaves me cold. The author is a personality and often is bigger or more interesting than their work. I don't think many people are going to become part of a fanbase following a machine.

  21. Like lots of new technologies, it'll take time to settle the ethics and legalities, and then we'll panic over something else. LOL. @samanthabwriter from

    1. It would have been nice, but I think "they" knew what they were doing when they developed and released it first.

  26. Regulation is certainly important. The Five Laws of Robotics needs a bit of expansion.

“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” ― Sylvia Plath
